Ceredigion Libraries have all you need for Life in Great Britain!

Becoming a British citizen or deciding to settle permanently in this country is an important event. If you are applying for naturalisation as a British citizen or for indefinite leave to remain, you will need to show that you know about life in the UK.

One method for doing this is by taking the Life in the UK Test. Ceredigion libraries have been offering a FREE resource which will prepare applicants for the Life in the UK Test at every branch library. Now this resource is FREE to access from home. Just visit www.220soft.net/ceredigion/, all you need is your library card number. If you don’t have a library card you can get yours for free by visiting any library at Aberaeron, Aberystwyth, Cardigan, Lampeter, Llandysul, New Quay and Tregaron.

This is part of a pilot project that is funded by, CyMAL, Museums, Archives and Libraries Wales a division of the Welsh assembly Government, as part of the Libraries for Life: Delivering a modern library service for Wales 2008-2011 programme.

BRECON LIBRARY’S BIG 40

Brecon Library looks forward to celebrating the 40th anniversary of its official opening by Prince Charles which took place on Thursday July 23^rd 1969. Why not call in and re-live that momentous day through a collection of official photographs while the visitors book – signed by Prince Charles – will also be on display together with a report of the day’s proceedings from the Brecon and Radnor Express. So if you were part of the crowd lining Brecon’s streets that day do call in – we’d love to see you. Furthermore, thanks to the generosity of Roberto’s Restaurant, try our testing quiz with the winner lined up for a bottle of house wine and a lovely meal. The display runs from Monday July 20^th through to Saturday July 25^th during normal library opening hours with that all important quiz just ready and waiting.

Rôl newydd i Ruth Jones – hyrwyddo llyfrgelloedd Cymru / New role for Ruth Jones – championing Welsh libraries

Bydd yr actores a’r awdures Ruth Jones yn derbyn rôl newydd i hyrwyddo a gweithredu fel eiriolwr dros lyfrgelloedd Cymru.

Yn ystod 2009/10, bydd Ruth yn mynychu digwyddiadau, gan gymryd rhan mewn cyfweliadau yn y cyfryngau a chan roi sylwadau ar straeon o’r cyfryngau a helpu i lansio ymgyrch genedlaethol broffil uchel yn yr hydref.

Dywedodd: “Rwy’n hoff iawn o lyfrgelloedd, maent yn lleoedd ysbrydolgar ac rwy’n falch o ddod yn Hyrwyddwr Llyfrgelloedd dros lyfrgelloedd Cymru. Yn aml llyfrgelloedd yw canolfan y gymuned - sef hafan sy’n agored i bawb, o fabanod i blant bach i borwyr y we yn eu hoed a’u hamser a gallwch ymuno am ddim.

“Rwyf wedi treulio sawl awr mewn llyfrgelloedd cyhoeddus ac academaidd drwy gydol fy oes - yn darllen, yn ysgrifennu ac yn ymchwilio. Darganfûm y rhyngrwyd am y tro cyntaf mewn llyfrgell a byddwn yn annog unrhyw un nad yw wedi galw yn eu llyfrgell yn ddiweddar (neu byth!), i alw heibio.

“Dewch i gael sgwrs gyda’r staff i weld beth sydd ganddynt i’w gynnig – yn ogystal â channoedd o lyfrau gwych ar unrhyw bwnc dan haul am ddim, mae DVDs a CDS ar gael, mynediad i’r rhyngrwyd am ddim, dosbarthiadau a gweithgareddau.”

Yn ddiweddar cyhoeddodd y Gweinidog dros Dreftadaeth, Alun Ffred Jones, y lefel uchaf o arian a roddwyd erioed sef £3.5 miliwn yn 2009-10 ar gyfer datblygu rhwydwaith llyfrgelloedd Cymru. Mae’r rhaglen yn rhan o raglen Llyfrgelloedd am Oes dair blynedd a anelir at annog mwy o bobl i fanteisio ar y cyfleusterau a gwasanaethau gwell a newydd a ddarperir. Fel rhan o’r rhaglen, caiff adeiladau’r llyfrgell eu moderneiddio a bydd mynediad am ddim i wasanaethau ar-lein fel adnoddau olrhain hanes teulu.

Dywedodd Alun Ffred Jones: “Mae’n newyddion gwych bod Ruth wedi derbyn y rôl newydd hon yn ogystal ag ymddangos ar y llwyfan a’r sgrin. Rwy’n siŵr y bydd yn Hyrwyddwr Llyfrgell effeithiol iawn ac y bydd yn darbwyllo’r rheiny sydd o farn nad yw llyfrgelloedd yn mynd â’u bryd nhw i ailystyried. Mae llyfrgelloedd wrth wraidd eu cymunedau lleol ac maent yn cynnig y cyfle i bobl wella eu sgiliau a datblygu eu gwybodaeth – gan sicrhau eu bod ar flaen y gad o ran y farchnad swyddi.”

Dyma’r tro cyntaf i lyfrgelloedd yng Nghymru fod â Hyrwyddwr Llyfrgell enwog ac mae’n dilyn llwyddiant ymgyrch Dyddiau Da llynedd a lansiwyd gan Ruth yn Llyfrgell y Barri lle y gwnaeth nifer o enwogion roi eu cefnogaeth i godi ymwybyddiaeth am werth llyfrgelloedd.

Actress and writer Ruth Jones is taking on a new role to promote and act as a spokesperson for Welsh libraries.

During 2009/10, Ruth will be attending events, taking part in media interviews and commenting on media stories about libraries and helping launch a high profile national campaign in the autumn.

She commented: “I’m a big fan of libraries, they are inspiring places and I’m proud to have been asked to become the Library Champion for Welsh libraries. Libraries are often the centre of the community – a haven that is open to all, from babies and toddlers to silver surfers and it’s free to join.

“I have spent many hours in public and academic libraries throughout my life - reading, writing and researching. Libraries are where I first discovered the internet and I would urge anyone who hasn’t been into their library lately (or ever!), take a look inside.

“Have a chat with the staff to see what is on offer – as well as hundreds of wonderful books on just about any subject for free, there are DVDs and CDs available, free internet access, classes and activities.”

The Minister for Heritage, Alun Ffred Jones, recently announced a record level of funding of £3.5 million in 2009-10 to develop the Welsh library network. The funding is part of the three year Libraries for Life programme aimed at attracting more people to benefit from the new improved facilities and services provided. As part of the programme, library buildings will be modernised and free access to online services such as family history resources will be provided.

Alun Ffred Jones said: “It’s great news that Ruth has taken on this new role in addition to those of stage and screen. I am sure that she will be a very effective Library Champion and will persuade those who think libraries aren’t for them to think again. Libraries are at the heart of their local communities and offer people the chance to improve their skills and develop their knowledge – giving them an added edge in the jobs market.”

This is the first time libraries in Wales have had a celebrity Library Champion and follows on from the success of last year’s Happy Days campaign which was launched by Ruth in Barry Library and enlisted the support of a number of celebrities to raise awareness of the value of libraries.

The purpose of these grants is to help improve the skills, qualifications and confidence of the library workforce in Wales.

Bursaries will be available for:

· Leadership Development
· MSc by Distance Learning Qualification
· Foundation Degree
· Vocational Qualifications

Leadership Bursaries

CyMAL will provide bursaries of up to £2,000 each (inc. VAT) for middle/senior managers from libraries in Wales to undertake leadership development programmes.

CyMAL will provide bursaries for library staff working in Wales to obtain bursaries of up to £3,000 each (inc. VAT) to undertake MSc Information and Library Management or an MSc Information & Library Studies by distance learning. The bursary is intended to assist with funding course fees for the first year of study. You may wish to apply for a BSc Information and Libraries Studies although preference will be given to applications for MSc qualifications.

Three institutions in the UK currently offer courses by distance learning:

Aberystwyth University
Northumbria University, Newcastle
Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen

Vocational Qualifications

Information and Library Services NVQs Level 2 and 3
Bursaries of up to £350 per candidate will be provided towards registration and assessment costs to candidates from libraries in Wales undertaking Information and Library Services NVQs Level 2 and 3. Other relevant NVQs for the library workplace e.g. Advice and Guidance may also be considered. Please contact Denise Lavis, CyMAL Training and Development Adviser if you wish to discuss a different NVQ.

The bursaries will be available from April 2009, and will be provided direct to Information & Library Service NVQ Assessment Centres on a limited basis.

In addition, to widen the access to workplace assessment of Information & Library Service NVQs support of up to £350 is also available for candidates undertaking the Learning & Development NVQ A1/A2 Assessor Awards and the V1 Internal Verifier Award (under the same conditions as Information & Library Service NVQ grants).

There is no requirement for individual candidates or their employers to complete a grant application to CyMAL. The course providers will apply to CyMAL on your behalf.

Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Applications of ICT in Libraries Bursaries

Two new Professional Development Awards have been created for UK public library staff: The Diploma and Advanced Diploma in Applications of ICT in Libraries. Both are UK-wide flexible vocational qualifications. Bursaries of up to £500 each are available on first come first served basis to candidates from libraries in Wales. The awards are available as taught courses or through distance learning.

The bursaries will be provided direct to ICTL Assessment Centres on a limited basis. The availability of grant must be established with CyMAL before a candidate is enrolled.

Mae hyn yn gyfle i wasanaethau Amgueddfeydd Archifau a Llyfrgelloedd i ddatblygu beth bynnag fannau awyr agored sydd ganddynt i gefnogi gweithgareddau dysgu Cyfnod Sylfaen. Amcanion:

· I ddangos mewn ffordd ymarferol sut mae modd defnyddio’r awyr agored i gyflenwi’r Cyfnod Sylfaen - pa bynnag faint neu ardal fo hynny.

· Rhoi enghreifftiau o sut mae prosiectau megis “Words in the Woods” yn gallu helpu i gyflenwi saith Maes Dysgu Fframwaith y Cyfnod Sylfaen

· Meithrin ac atgyfnerthu cysylltiadau ar lefel leol a chenedlaethol trwy farchnad o stondinau arddangos

Bydd y diwrnod yn cynnwys sesiynau gan Theatr Iolo a Learning Through Landscapes Cymru:

· Bydd Theatr Iolo yn esbonio trefn prosiect Words in the Woods a sut y gwnaeth y prosiect helpu’r plant i feithrin sgiliau iaith. Bydd y rhan hon o’r diwrnod yn cynnwys cyflwyno storïau, dan arweiniad hwylusydd/storïwr. Bydd dau actor yn perfformio’r storïau yn y coed.

This is an opportunity for museums, archives and libraries to see how they can develop whatever outdoor spaces are available to them to support foundation phase learning activities. It presents an opportunity to network and build links not only with practitioners in this field, but also with exhibitors who have an interest in supporting the delivery of the Foundation Phase.

Both events are aimed at practitioners in libraries, museums and archives in Wales who are involved, or would like to be involved, in the provision of learning experiences to children within the Foundation Phase age range (3-7 yrs).

Aims:

· To illustrate in a practical way how the outdoor environment - whatever space or area that may consist of - can be utilised to deliver the Foundation Phase.

· To provide examples of how a project such as “Words in the Woods” can support delivery of the seven Areas of Learning within the Foundation Phase Framework.

· To develop and strengthen links at both local and national level through a “market place” of exhibition stands

The day will include presentations by Theatre Iolo and Learning Through Landscapes Cymru:

· Theatr Iolo will explain how the Words in the Woods project worked and how it helped the children’s language acquisition. This part of the day will consist of a presentation of stories, led by a facilitator/storyteller and performed in the forest by two actors.

· Learning Through Landscapes Cymru will provide delegates with examples of how they can develop their outdoor provision. This will include areas immediately outside their setting and/or areas of limited space.

These workshops are jointly organised by CyMAL: Museums, Archives and Libraries Wales and DCELLS (Department for Children, Education, Lifelong Learning and Skills). Attendance is free for all delegates. Lunch and refreshments will be provided. As a substantial portion of this day will be held outdoors, delegates are advised to come suitably attired.

UK Learning Spaces Special Interest Group

We would like to invite you to the inaugural meeting of a UK Learning Spaces
Special Interest Group, to be held on 23 April 2009.
This initial meeting (co-hosted by Sheffield Hallam University and the
University of Sheffield) will focus on sharing research,
practice and ideas around learning space design and evaluation, as well as
scoping out ideas for the future development of the
group.

It is our intention that the group will be led collectively by all members,
with a rolling programme of meetings to be arranged and
hosted by member institutions. By doing this, we hope to give interested
individuals the chance to visit and showcase a broad range
of developments. We are also developing an online presence to support the
development of the group and the sharing of resources.

The for the first meeting will include visits to Sheffield Hallam's new informal and social learning
space in the Adsetts Centre, as well as the award winning Information
Commons at the University of Sheffield. We would also like to
invite delegates to propose short, 5-10 minute papers focusing upon
developments within their own place of work

The event is free of charge and lunch will be provided. Please state if you
have any specific dietary requirements.

To explore active, reader-centred work in the academic library
To practice selecting the right stock and location for effective promotions
To learn and practice effective display techniques
To consider how library layout affects choice
To identify audiences and topics for effective promotion
To devise a small experimental project to try out the techniques in your own place of work

Facilitator:

Sessions will be run by Anne Downes, Training Director of Opening the Book. She has 15 years of experience of designing and delivering training in libraries and has worked closely with every library authority in Wales on the 3 year Estyn Allan reader development project.

What we provide:

In order to demonstrate and practice the latest techniques in effective library display, the course fee includes a package of acrylic display units and graphics especially designed for libraries by Opening the Book Promotions. These will be despatched to the venue in advance of the training session.

Participants will be encouraged to devise a small scale project to try out and to evaluate new practice in their own place of work and they will be invited to feedback to Opening the Book on their results for comment.

Preparation:

Is there a book that got you interested in something new? Is there a particular title that first fired your interest in a particular subject, hobby, or topic? Please bring a copy with you to the session. You will be taking it back with you, so you can bring a library book!

Teddy Bears Picnic

The event will be held in the grounds of Llandrindod Wells Library on Wednesday 25th June between 11am-1pm.

Aimed at the under 5's, there will be stories and songs with award winning author Rob Lewis, songs and rhymes in Welsh with Twf and Mudiad Ysgolion Meithrin. Children will be also be able to plant their own herbs, and make a teddy bear mask. Language and Play, Play Radnor and Pre-school Playgroups Association will also be there with activities and information.

You can also join the library on the day for your chance to win your very own Bookstart Bear and some lovely books. Drinks and light refreshments will be available - or bring along your own picnic and a blanket to relax under the trees

Vicki Workman from Powys County Council's library service, said: "We are looking forward to the event and hope parents and children will really enjoy it. We extend a warm welcome to all - just don’t forget your teddy bear!"

There is no need to book for this event. All children must be accompanied by an adult. In the event of bad weather, it will move into the library building.

In partnership with the National Library of Wales library staff throughout the partnership are encouraged to attend a screening of the Hollywood Librarian at the National Library of Wales on Wednesday 14th May 2008 at 12:30pm.

The Hollywood Librarian: A Look at Librarians through Film is the first full-length documentary film to focus on the work and lives of librarians. Using the entertaining and appealing context of American movies, the film will hold some surprises for people who may think they know what librarians do. American film contains hundreds of examples of librarians and libraries on screen – some positive, some negative, some laughable and some dead wrong.

ANN M. SEIDL (Writer and Director) has a master of library and information services from the University of Denver. She is a library consultant and the owner and principal of Information, Managed, a library consulting business which provides library research and GIS analysis products to public libraries and systems. She completed the screenplay for the film in 2003 and has spoken at annual library conferences in more than 10 states and Canada about the documentary. Before becoming a librarian, Ann worked as a voice-over actor for various television and film productions, hosted a weekly television news magazine in the Denver market, and anchored fund drives for both Colorado Public Television and Florida Public Radio.

Helvetica

The University of Wales Lampeter in partnership with the National Library of Wales is showing the feature length independent film Helvetica. The film is about typography, graphic design and global visual culture. It looks at the proliferation of one typeface (which is celebrating its 50th birthday this year) as part of a larger conversation about the way type affects our lives. Helvetica is currently screening at film festivals, museums, design conferences, and cinemas worldwide.

The screening is at 7pm Wednesday 12th March at the National Library of Wales, and best of all admission is free!

Foreign Language Books at Coleg Powys

A collection of around 98 foreign language books are now available from Coleg Powys Learning Resource Services. The collection includes books in Polish, Russian, Bengali, Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese, Turkish, Czech, and Kurdish Kirmanji.

Authors included in the collection range from Jane Austin to John Le Carre, and Danielle Steele to Stephen King. The scheme is currently a pilot project, which if successful will hopefully secure extra funding to extend the service.

National Year of Reading

Life in Great Britain course availbale at Ceredigion Public Libraries

The Life in Great Britain course from 220 Soft helps prepare applicants for the British Citizenship Tests and is now available from all public workstations at Ceredigion Public Libraries. The majority of migrants wishing to live in the UK permanently must pass the "Life in the UK" test which is based on Chapters 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 of the Home Office publication "Life in the United Kingdom - A journey into Citizenship -Second Edition (2007)". The 220 Soft course, with its split paragraphs and illustrations, makes the text far easier to digest. In addition this course has Full English Speech, a Glossary, quick Section Tests, Practice for the real test and a Full Test that is a simulation of the real test.

E-resources Training

As part of the Libraries for Life project, a series of training events will be offered on the online services being provided. This will include an introduction to KnowUK and NewsUK (the provision of online electronic resources), training on the new “TYPO3” library.wales.org website and information about the WebFeat cross catalogue search.These sessions are aimed at all levels of library staff within the public and FE sectors. Anyone with an interest is welcome to attend any of the following events:
Tuesday 4th March, Aberystwyth University.
Thursday 6th March, Cardiff University.
Friday 7th March, NEWI Wrexham.
Friday 14th March, University of Newport.
Monday 17th March, Bangor University.
Thursday 20th March, Swansea University.
Tuesday 25th March, MRC Llandrindod Wells.
Wednesday 26th March, Trinity College Carmarthen.

Training Design and Delivery

A great big thank you goes out to Helen Conroy from Netskills who provided us with a Training Design and Delivery Course. The course is also accredited, with the participants who do their homework, gaining a BTEC qulaification. The course itself was proven to be popular with people attending from all over Powys and Cerdigion. So far from the feedback received people found the course to be worthwhile but not for the faint hearted! In amongst the work required for the accreditations was four days of intensive training, a presentation (video recorded, eek!), some 500 word reports and some of the best cake available in mid Wales (thank you the The Strand in Talgarth).

We hope to be adding photographs from the event and, if anyone is feeling brave, the presentations from the final day,

Six Book Challenge

RNIB Visual Awareness Training

Our thanks goes to Tony Jefford of the RNIB Cymru for providing Visual Awareness Training at Aberystwyth University and Coleg Powys this week. Both dates were very informative and proved popular with those that attended. Staff learned how to guide a visually impaired person, common obstacles, and how best to improve their service for visually impaired people whilst being put in that position by wearing blindfolds and simulation goggles! The sessions were informative and entertaining.

We hope everyone enjoyed themselves over the festive season. Just because it’s January does’t mean it’s quiet in the partnership, we are very busy this month with lots of training events. Bronllys Hospital is the venue for the Training Design and Delivery course provided by Netskills. We also have several different venues for our RNIB Cymru Visual Awareness Training. We’re in for another exciting and busy year in the partnership…be on the lookout for more training opportunities, research reports and more! CILIP Training Events

Our thanks go to Phil Bradley and Terry Kendrick for providing us with informative (and entertaining) training on Web 2.0 and Going Beyond Google. Both days had a good turn out and were thoroughly enjoyed by everyone, it was also noted that one of the best bits was lunch in the Arts Centre!

A lot has been learned from the training courses, with much being put into practice. For example their is now a Cadwyn Y Canolbarth Pagecast which you can view here. The Pagecast is still being developed so if their is anything which you would like to see up there please get in touch. The Pagecast contains a RSS Feed of this Blog, the website (which is still being developed) and a link to the Newsletter. We would really love to hear your comments and opinions on everything we do, so you can even leave a message on the message board!

Powys Public Libraries Solve Murder!

Well done to circulation staff from Llandrindod Wells library for solving the crime of the century at their Christmas Party on Saturday night! The staff attended a murder mystery dinner and solved the murder winning a bottle of wine and a t-shirt. Must have been the team name that helped...C.S.I Llandrindod Library, Special Branch!

CyMAL Induction

As the Region Development Officer for the Cadwyn Y Canolbarth partnership I attended a CyMAL induction at Gregynog last week. It was a good opportunity to find out about all the different strands of the Libraries for Life project. I also got to meet the other Regional Development Officers and find out what everyone has been doing for their region.

Representatives from the National Library of Wales were their to discuss developments they are taking forward. This included the e-resources tender to replace the current KnowUK and NewsUK tender. The successful bid from this will be announce shortly and service will begin in January. Also the NLW is developing a cross catalogue search facility for the whole of Wales AND we were given background and more information on the library.wales.org website. Speaking of the library.wales.org site if you have any comments or opinions on it I would love to hear from you. Even if its the smallest thing, like the colour, or the layout, anything at all we would love to hear about your views on the site and whether it works (or doesn't) for you.

Karen Mills the Society of Chief Librarians Development Officer was also there to discuss developments on that side of things, as was the Libraries for Life Programme manager (Rheinallt Jones) and CyMALs Libraries Development Officer (Alyson Tyler). Jane Purdie gave us an overview of the marketing strand of the project as well as upcoming marketing initiatives. Jane was also keen to promote the Library Toolkit website, a very useful site for marketing in and for libraries.

Land, Life and Leisure Demonstration
Our thanks go to Sue Ferguson, Sarah Gwenlan and Phil Colbourn from Land, Life and Leisure who successfully demonstrated the database at Coleg Powys, Llandrindod Wells on Monday. The session proved popular with a variety of people attending including library staff, Coleg Powys tutors, and staff from various departments in Powys County Council. Welcome to the Cadwyn Y Canolbarth blog. Cadwyn Y Canolbarth is a library partnership covering Ceredigion and Powys in Mid Wales. The partnership covers health, FE, HE and public libraries. Cadwyn Y Canolbarth aims to build on the successful Linc Y Canolbarth scheme which operated across Ceredigion and Carmarthenshire.

The partnership has been established for a few months now and we have organised a few events. We have hosted a staff networking event at Coleg Powys in Newtown, and coming soon are a demonstration event and training events.

The demonstration event is a demonstration of the Land, Life and Leisure database. Through the Mid-Wales Library and Information Partnership (now known as Cadwyn Y Canolbarth) we now have access to Land, Life and Leisure, which is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government. Land includes agriculture, environmental issues, ecosystems, landscapes and land use. Life includes the natural world and rural communities. Leisure, includes tourism, recreation and small animal care.
Land, Life and Leisure is compiled by Aberystwyth University. It is a developing database designed to give farmers, small business owners, countryside workers and students access to the latest countryside information at the click of a computer mouse.

The demonstration will be on Monday 26th November at 11.30am and 2.30pm

The Chartered Institute for Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) are delivering two training events for us at Aberystwyth University, Hugh Owen Library, on Friday 14th December and Monday 17th December 2007. The training courses are Web 2.0: The nuts and bolts and Going Beyond Google. Both days are now fully booked, and will hopefully be educational and entertaining.
